MEISSEN - Dinner plate, third quarter of the eighteenth century. Mark : Crossed swords in under glaze blue, impressed "20". Diameter: 9 1/4", height 2", The plate has a petal-shaped rim. Painted in polychrome with a butterfly perched on a flowering branch in the center and three different flowering branches alternating with smaller sprigs. Brown rim line. This popular pattern represents a combination of two styles. The center appears to be inspired by Chinese famille verte porcelain of the K'ang Hsi Period (1662-1722), while the flowers on the rim are directly taken from Japanese Kakiemon porcelain. It is commonly known as the " butterfly " or Schmetterling pattern. Condition: Good |
