MEISSEN - Tea cup, circa 1750 - 1760. Height - 1 7/8", diameter 3 1/8". Mark - crossed swords in under glaze blue and impressed "4". By the middle of the 18th century in Germany the baroque style, characterized by massive and strong symmetrical designs, was replaced by the more whimsical and flamboyant rococo. The new style advocated totally asymmetrical forms and was more "feminine" in character. This cup clearly display the rococo fashion. The cup wall opposite the ear - shaped handle is painted in polychrome with Watteau scene framed in rococo grapevine, scrolls and trellis cartouches with basket of flowers at their tops. The bottom interior of the cup decorated with flowers. The cup has gold bond on the rims. Very good shape with no cracks or chips, some wear to the surface and especially to the gold rims. |
