MEISSEN - coffee cup and saucer circa 1740. Cup: height 2 3/4", saucer: diameter 5 1/4" Mark: crossed swords under glaze blue, the cup with painter's ( ? ) mark "4" in brown, the saucer with painter's ( ? ) mark "4" in purple and impressed numeral "63".The chocolate cup is painted in polychrome with a continuous harbor scene. Double iron-red lines provide a base for the panoramic harbor view. The interior of the saucer have similar scenes. Two concentric rings painted in iron-red frame the scene in the saucer. The cup has a scrolled, lyre handle. The cup and saucer have a gilt-edged rims. In generally very good condition apart from some minor wear to the gilding on the rims, saucer slightly worn. |
