Deep dinner plate, circa 1770. Mark: Crossed swords and dot under glaze
blue, " 12 " impressed. Diameter 10 3/8", height 1 3/4". The dish
has a petal - shaped edge and a basked
weave relief border ( Alt Ozier pattern ). The center is painted
with polychrome exotic
birds, possibly by the bird - painter Mann. The border is decorated in
purple monochrome with scattered springs and bouquets of flowers. Gold

and rim. The word " osier " in both French and English,
refers to the twigs of various members of the willow family that were
used for basket wearing and wicker work. The Germans adopted this term
from the French as it apparently seemed especially appropriate. The Alt
Ozier relief pattern was modeled in 1735. Around 1774 big ornithological
Dinner Service with similar exotic birds was ordered by Mr. J. A.
Reepmaker, member of on eminent patrician family and Lord Mayor of
Rotterdam in 1787. |
