MEISSEN - Dinner plate, circa 1750. Mark: Crossed swords in under glaze blue, " 22 " impressed. Diameter: 9 3/4", height 1 3/8". The plate has a petal - shaped edge. The flange and center are decorated with molded foliate relief design ( Gotzkowsky pattern ) and painted with natural flowers in brown, purple, iron - red, olive - green, grass - green, blue and yellow. The rim is painted in gold with a diaper pattern. The molding on this dish, described as the " Gotzkowsky " pattern, derives its name from Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky ( b. 1710 ) a Prussian finacier who patronized the factory from 1740 to 1750. Later, Gotzkowsky was to become a porcelain manufacturer in Berlin from 1761 to 1763. The pattern was probably modeled by Johann Friedrich Eberlein ( 1696 - 1749 ) and first appears on Meissen porcelain in 1741. Good shape with no crack or chips, some wear to the surface and rim. |
