Dinner plate, circa 1730 - 1735. Mark : Crossed
swords in under glaze blue. Diameter: 8 3/4". The plate has a
petal-shaped rim. Painted in polychrome with a butterfly perched on a
flowering branch in the center and three different flowering branches
alternating with smaller sprigs. Brown rim line. This popular pattern
represents a combination of two styles. The center appears to be
inspired by
Chinese famille verte porcelain of the K'ang Hsi
Period
(1662-1722), while the flowers on the rim are directly
taken from Japanese Kakiemon porcelain. It is commonly known as the
" butterfly " or Schmetterling pattern. Good shape with
no cracks or chips, some wear to the surface and rim. Compare:
