Imre Gergely.
Item: #PA005

This is a spectacular, quite lovely painting on canvas of an exotic market scene by Hungarian artist Imre Gergely (1868-1914).  After finishing the School of Model Drawing he studied in Vienna and Munich, and then, as from 1892 he was regularly exhibiting his Italian landscapes, street scenes, colorful pictures depicting flowers, and those of the Tunis fairs full of feeling in the Art Gallery. In 1911 for his painting "Fair on the Franz Joseph Quay" he was awarded a Torley prize in the National Saloon. Some of his paintings (Astrik Delivers the Crown, Bethlen Receiving Foreign Ministers, The fall of Ottokar, The Torda Diet) are now owned be the Hungarian National Gallery.
The painting is framed and is full of fascinating details, including an armed guard on a camel and a woman with a water jar, as well as heaps of produce for sale and background architectural details. The canvas measures approximately  23" X 31". Frame looks to be original and  has minor chips around the edges. The painting has been professionally restored
