Portrait sketch by J. M. Flagg.
Item: #PA010

This is a original pencil and charcoal portrait sketch on illustration board by James Montgomery Flagg.  American (1877 - 1960). Signed,  and titled " Robert Handley". Excellent condition, the image size is 9 1/2" X  14", with mat and new frame 18" X  22". J. M. Flagg lived with gusto. He epitomized the public concept of the handsome, bohemian artist, surrounded by beautiful models, dashing off pictures with sheer exuberance of talent. He worked rapidly and easily in all media and with any subject matter. Probably the single best - known and most reproduced of Flagg's pictures was his famous " I Want You"  for the U. S. Army recruiting poster showing Uncle Sam pointing directly at the viewer. Printed in the millions, it was used during both world wars. Flagg was a painter of serious portraits, too. However, Flagg was a versatile artist, as much a celebrity as the famous people whose portraits he drew or whom he caricatured. Every one he depicted, from presidents to movie stars, were all flattered to pose for this incisive artist. He exhibited in the Paris salon of 1900, at the National Academy of Design and New York Watercolor Club.
